In Loving Tribute to Carolyn J Ochs

Carolyn J. Ochs
November 12, 1942 – January 6, 2006

On January 6, 2006, New Jersey lost one of its greatest breast cancer advocates. After battling breast cancer for 9 years, Carolyn J. Ochs succumbed to this deadly disease. Through it all, she was an inspiration to all of us. She never complained or thought to ask “Why me?” Instead, she focused her attention on becoming informed and working with her physicians to manage her treatments proactively. Carolyn strongly believed in turning adversity into opportunity. She never allowed her illness to prevent her from enjoying the many opportunities that life has to offer.

Carolyn was a tireless worker for breast cancer issues. As an active advocate she was one of the founding members of the South Jersey Breast Cancer Coalition and their Membership Chairperson for many years. She also worked with the National Breast Cancer Coalition as a team leader to promote funding for breast cancer research, education and treatment. Carolyn was also active in raising funds for breast cancer by participating in many well known walks, including a 60 mile three day event and her own team of walkers in a local walk called Carolyn’s Crusaders. Over the years she personally raised over tens of thousands of dollars annually.

She rarely gave speeches, but, preferred instead to sit around a table with women who would exchange their feelings and fears about breast cancer.

Carolyn was available to anyone who needed help, guidance, comforting and loved… Her friends knew her as a quiet woman who deeply cared about her family, her church, her perennial garden at her home on the beach in South Jersey.

Since the inception of the Carolyn J. Ochs Memorial Client Assistance Fund, over $195,000.00 has been granted to clients in need of essential bills while going through treatment.
